Deficit Rubik’s Cube

The New York Times created something very interesting that they call the “deficit puzzle. It contains two large boxes segmented into smaller boxes, each of which represents one billion dollars (or 1/418th) of the projected FY20015 total Federal budget deficit, or 1/1355th of the projected 2030 deficit.

Below the boxes is a list of 40 different actions that could be taken to either cut expenses or raise revenues along with their estimated financial impact; for example, cutting all farm subsidies would reduce costs by an estimated $14B while returning the estate (death) tax to Clinton-era levels would raise an additional $50B in 2015. By making a check-mark next to the programs you would cut, or the taxes you would raise, the deficit boxes are filled in and you can see what it will actually take to eliminate the deficit.

WARNING: You may find this exercise very depressing. What it illustrates more than anything is the enormity of the task, and you don’t have to be a deep political thinker to recognize that we are light years away from having a government with the courage to even publicly discuss what needs to be done, let alone the foresight to begin making the changes that will be necessary to keep the United States from becoming Greece.

If the political discourse now is reminiscent of the years leading up to the Civil War just imagine what’s coming.

An accompanying article by David Leonhardt can be found here.

The Tea Party is more interested in cutting spending than in the taxation end of the equation. Sure they would like tax reduction, but that does not work on the debt.

If the economy does not move forward, it will die like a shark and it will be hell to bring it up to speed again.

Perhaps another world war will do the trick...

The only way to make any progress in this area is to reduce military spending significantly, raise eligibility for medicare and social security, and raise taxes to Clinton ear levels. Good luck. Congress will do this when pigs fly.

Up until the Bush administration lowered taxes and invaded Iraq, we were actually making progress in this area. Now were in the hands of gutless cowards who barely have the will to get out of bed in the morning.

And yet the Republicans will be back in the driver's seat in the House. My favorite political cartoon this past election showed a couple in the back seat of a car. In the front seat Obama was driving and a couple of Republicans sat next to him. One of the couple in back said, "No, we'd rather have the guys driving that put us into the ditch last time."

But the Democrats are not helping. Probably too late, but they need to grow a spine.

Legalize marijuana and tax it. It will drive down the price and put pressure on the cartels as well as reduce spending on interdiction.

Eliminate subsidies for sugar and corn. Scrap the ethanol program.

Put a tariff on products made out of the USA which are produced here.

Pull all troops out of the Middle East and put a billion dollar bounty on OBL. Should save billions!

In 1946 what did our fathers say. Most of them lived through some pretty stark times.Projections are but opaque wall sillouettes. Its time we all go to work, have a few cocktails and take care of our family. because the families the goverment takes care of are not pretty sight.

Michelle Bachman is getting this all figured out for us. We won't have an earmark problem because she said;“I don’t believe that building roads and bridges and interchanges should be considered an earmark. There’s a big difference between funding a tea pot museum and a bridge over a vital waterway.”

So once we stop funding tea pot museums then it's back on easy street for the old USofA.

Damn. I had my heart set on opening my own tea pot museum soon.
