Miscellaneous

A New Yorker cover is often worth the price of the magazine all by itself. This one qualifies easily. Thanks to Wilton for the nomination.

Hankster offers the following quote from Saul Bellows as a prescription for your times: "We are here, in this fallen state, riven by contradictions, given to understand some things but never others, faltering in our wills, flawed in our abilities, uncertain in our actions. But that is where we must begin and there is no excuse for not taking the task seriously."

Most of the talk about an Obama economic stimulus plan centers on creating jobs for people to work on infrastructure projects. If you will pardon a brief moment of self-satisfaction I wish to refer you to my January 23, 2008 post offering the "d’blank Economic Stimulation Plan," which did exactly that, but never made it out of committee. I always knew I’d have been a better President than W. here is the proof.

Finally, this from UPI: “Unhappy people watch significantly more television compared with happy people who are more socially active, according to a University of Maryland analysis of U.S. adults. Happy people attended more religious services, voted more and read more newspapers."

Misc continued . . AY and I are in complete and astonished agreement to find we are behind the Mitster/Mittens on his op-ed in today's Times. I saw him on Morning Joe this am explaining and I actually did not throw up looking at him. the round table suggested him as SecTreas - again, AY and I could get behind that. Am I a closet republican? No congrats to me on Pedey's MVP?

I'm nixing Mittens as Sec. of the Treasury. He'd love that center stage the financial crisis would give him -- to launch his 2012 bid.
Plus he's such a tool!!

I don't trust this University of Maryland study. When I was a student at Maryland the happy people were turning themselves on, not the TV. I can also attest that none of those same happy people were going into the Chapel. The most prominent place of worship was the Varsity Grill with the $.35 16 oz Black Label and free peanuts.
Not that I am trying to suggest I was with those happy folks, it is just an observation.

I thought Romney's op-ed was good. i'd vote for him to be CEO of GM, but can't see him as Sec. Treas.

What about unhappy people who don't watch tv? Oh wait... they end up building bombs in shacks in the woods.

Someone said on Morning Joe that in 2010 a significant portion of the health and retirement cost for union workers shift to the union. He said that would take the $76 or so an hour down to the high forties.
Does that sound correct? If so, then maybe we should put billions in to see if it can be turned around.
If Mitt is for something, my kneejerk reaction is to oppose it and this is the only justification I can make for not letting the chips fall where they may.

OOOH a black label, I think I remember seeing many empty cans of CBL strewn about big "D's" apartment in Columnbus. You fellas drank nothing but the best.I wonder if its as good as a 4-0 big cat malt liquor. That is the popular choice of Harding Raider/ Panther fans. I don't agree with the study either, is it evidence based? Besides secretary of Treasury he still has Sec of State and to see if his Attorney Gen pick holds up.I guess we will have to wait and see if it is just change or real change.

7 Carlings and a double Rock and Rye. Another classic from "Animal House" whose roots are deep in NE Ohio.

As far as Mitt's concerned (who can possibly trust a guy that will allow himself to be called "Mitt") I'm with KG. If Mitt says it, it can't be right. Although he probably said the opposite in the recent past.

I have no idea what's the right way to go in Detroit but if we do attempt to bail them out, congress should insist that everey executive with the title of VP and above get broomed out. Masturbating monkeys throwing feces could run them better.

I'm sick of the unions taking the fall for the demise of GM et al. These people don't design cars, they make what they're told to make. They don't decide what to make or how to sell them. If Detroit had spent as much time designing fuel efficient cars as they did fighting fuel efficiency legislation, they'd be in much better shape.

or if the UAW had not insisted, threatened and held-up in order to achieve cradle to grave health care!

I know this may be cynical but I don’t think the Big 3 wants to be bailed out. I think they want to go into chapter 11.

That way they don’t have to pay creditors and can break the unions retirement benefits agreement. (After prolonged strong negotiations.)

RSB may have a strong point. It would take a huge effort on the part of the american people to increase the number of cars bought from the big three just so they could make the payments on billion dollar loans. Any body got an idea what the loan payment would be say 10 billion? Rock and Rye? are you guys serious?

Yesterday cinched it to me that the Big 3 should go bankrupt.
As many here have said, the American car is as good or better than imports. Yet most people either don't know it or don't believe it. Sounds like a marketing issue that could be turned around.
Yet yesterday the big three came to DC to beg for billions like the panhandlers on every block in the city. The difference was that our local panhandlers do not arrive in three separate corporate jets.
With this type of insight into the nuance of the best way to make your case, I doubt that they could sell a car if they were the only ones making them.
Another impressive showing was when the head of GM was asked what the quarterly earning might be; he replied that "we don't provide financial guidance in earnings."
Projections? We don't need no stinkin projections.

d'blank said...

It’s hard to argue that the private jets were a PR miscue of Bushian proportions, but SEC rules prohibit them from talking about projected earning except in a very proscribed manner.
But where is the outrage against the leaders of the Wall Street firms that have our billions? Do you think those guys walk to work? Drink table wine at dinner? The CEO of Goldman makes more than the 3 auto CEOs combined, and Goldman doesn’t make anything or employ as many people as work in one F-150 plant.
I can’t defend these people. They’ve made lots of mistakes, although most of the sins they are blamed for were committed by their long-gone predecessors. The current guys are trying to dig out of very deep holes dug over decades by former CEOs and UAW leaders. (yes – they did layoff future pensions and HC to the unions but it doesn’t kick in until 2011 – I think.)
How will really pay here is the big 3 go under? The unionized blue-collar workforce for sure. Next the non-union blue-collar guys from the industry suppliers. Then us (the taxpayers) from lost taxes and increased services.
Paulson thought we could let Lehman go under and no one outside the firm would really notice. That worked out pretty well.
If the car companies go down, this whole country may go right down with it.

It is true that my daughter doesn't run into many CEOs from Wall Street when she takes the subway to go to work. It still strikes me that the Big 3 heads give the impression that it is beneath them to testify as to why we should bail them out and what they plan to do with it.
Perhaps I am old fashioned but when someone asks me to help them out, I would like them to at least pretend that they appreciate it.

As we've discussed KG, I don't know why we'd hold these executives up to a higher standard than our children. Although as they get older, our children at least give the impression that they appreciate what we do for them. Not so these guys.

A nation turns its lonely eyes to you, Barack. It's true we have only one President at a time but we have had none (nor a SecTreas) this last month. What (other than why should his administration take the blame for this ungodly mess) prevents him from acting as Prez? We're getting nuttin' from the guy who's probably cowering under his bed. Wonder what his poor father, GHWB, is thinking. Don't give a whit what Fat Barbara is feeling.

kgwhit said...

W is not cowering under his bed. You give him too much credit for awareness. He came in clueless and will leave clueless. I heard he wanted to be Commish of baseball. If he gets it then we will have the final nail in the coffin of what was once America's pastime.
He could pull off the trifecta; destroying our economy, our standing in the world and baseball all in his lifetime. Now that is a legendary feat..
