Can someone explain this?

Here were the headlines on http://www.cnnmoney.com/ at the end of the day on Friday:
* Most jobs lost in 34 years. 11 month decline of 1.9 million
* Unemployment rate soars to 6.7%
* Foreclosures soar 76% to record 1.35 million
* Dow rises 269.13

If this were an SAT test I think I could nail the line that doesn’t belong here. I will never understand the financial markets; but then again, the professionals don’t seem to either.

Charlie Rangel is back in the news. Seems he applied for and received a “homestead” tax rebate from NY state for a house he owns, but to legally qualify the house must be one’s principal residence. But Charlie lives in three rent controlled apartments in Harlem, also in conflict with the law. Then there is he failure to pay taxes on his condo in the Dominican. It’s good to be the king. It’s been a tough year for NY Dems. In addition to Charlie’s and Governor Spitzer’s little problems, new Governor Patterson had to fire his number one aide who had failed to pay US income taxes for several years. His lawyer claimed a form of mental illness that prevents a person from paying taxes. I wish it was contagious.

Two more reasons I love magazines: Read Esquire’s article in the December issue on Dean Kamen. Inventing the Segway may be among the least impressive (and least strange) of his many accomplishments. Turning sewage into drinking water? A perpetual motion machine? No problem for Dean. No blog is ever going to provide the world with this kind of journalism.

Is there any doubt that Clint Eastwood is the coolest guy on earth? Read this mini review in Time of his acting and directing career combined with more info on the upcoming Gran Torino, which he says will be his last acting job. His timing is also impeccable as it turns out he plays a recently retired Ford assembly line worker. Pretty topical.

Re your musings on the anomaly of bad news with the mini-uptick in the market Friday . . .as our friend sitonmyface will concur (no doubt) chalk it up to HOPE. A 4-letter word that has almost by itself made this off-kilter country feel better about itself! Charlie Rangel's quick impeachment will mean his constituents can gain some kind of representation in congress. Perhaps Caroline Kennedy who, one hopes, will fill her uncle's and Jake Javit's seat . . .

Personally, I like Caroline Kennedy. However, I find the hubris of the Kennedy clan to be epic.

She may be the anti-Sarah Palin but the underlying assumption that popularity trumps or at least makes up for experience cannot be overlooked.

What about the concept of meritocracy?

Are we chopped liver?

I just read the Esquire article on Dean Kamen. He can afford to be eccentric. The rest of us are just nuts. He is brilliant among bright people. Yet he does prove our system has major flaws when answers to seminal problems can't be instituted due to non-compliance of our institutions.

I never thought the people who moved stock prices were especially motivated by hope, but maybe in these unusual times...

If the uptick in Friday's Dow is attributed to the collective hope of BHO fans, then why did it plunge
700 points recently? Did they all just just happen to simultaneously forget who was the messiah-elect that day?

And Caroline Schlossberg is qualified for the Senate because...?

Oh right, she's the neice of an obese, potato-nosed drunk who should have been imprisoned for negligent homicide.

Maybe she swims, runs, hides and spins like Unlce Teddy.

That's fartway's brand of (nepotistic)leadership.

Fisty: you gotta let those of us who have been made, over the last eight years, to feel as though we are not quite Americans enjoy this period. It's ugly out there, it's gonna get worse. Let us be part of this great country again if only for a short while. Posturing has already begun for '12 so let us have through January 20.

Fisty ,love your tribute to Uncle Teddy. The qualifications for Senator is a law degree, right?Does Caroline have one of those? Charlie Rangel has nothing on the Mahoning Valley.Jim Trafficant was way more blatantly corrupt, people still voted for him. Rumors has it he is coming out in March and he wants to do more than paint. For all of you BHO fans there is always hope, Hope is why people see Doctors

Nancy Pelosi is speaker of the house because, as the daughter of the former Mayor of Baltimore, she knew how to fundraise. Her main claim to fame in California was raking in the dough for candidates. CKS, who is also a great fundraiser, brings even less to the table than Pelosi does. At least Pelosi was an intern, along with Stenny Hoyer, for Senator Daniel Brewster. Caroline pranced around the white house lawn on horseback. Just what we need another dilettante twit in Congress.

Can't really see CKS as the junior senator from NY. I can't imagine she'd acutally want to move down to DC. She'd have to spend more time with her Aunt Eunice and I wouldn't wish that on anybody.

I can’t explain this….I just got a notice from my credit card company that they raised my limit by $5,000.00
I thought we were having a credit crunch?
Hmmm. Makes no sense.
