The absurdity of Afghanistan

According to the administration, we are staying in Afghanistan in order to protect the population from violence, establish a non-corrupt and functioning government, build a working infrastructure, provide a functioning education system, eliminate drug trafficking, and eradicate terrorists inside their borders.

We can’t even accomplish these goals in the United States.

First to raise his hand in class, I might be totally off base here, but my guess is the reason we are staying on in Afghanistan is to support our drones. From what I am reading, they are having a positive effect on driving Qaeda and Taliban nuts. Pakistan officials want us to back off but locals, who loathe the Taliban, like the drones. Sounds like the correct mix to my ears.

Nicely stated, B! Absurd?...I'm not sure there is an adjective to describe the insanity of continuing to prosecute this war. When did the Generals get side-tracked from hunting terrorists to chasing the Taliban? I'm just saying! Seems like left over 50'/60's foreign policy thinking is sadly still alive and well. It's only gonna get worse!!

I think what we are trying to do in Afghanistan is impossible but I guess it's our turn to be handed our asses by these people. Terms like "win", "victory", and even "war" make no sense in the context of of our involvement in this "country". What is there to "win"? Who are we at "war" with?

Helping a country stabilize and fend off crackpots like the Taliban is a worthwhile and noble cause but only if the Afghanis want it more than we do. If the don't, nothing we do will make a bit of difference other than to kill our people and make us poorer. Besides, we can't afford this right now. Come see us this time next year. I can't imagine anything will have changed.

Military/Industrial complex ring a bell? You cant sell new bullets if you dont use the old ones.
Every war since WW2 has had the same scenario. It's located far from the USA,it's in terrain difficult for news coverage, it's news makes the 6:00 news a day later,it's against non-whites,it has religious and/or political overtones and no matter how far from our shores, life in the USA is threatened.
Drones,I'll take a dozen.

Sarah Chayes called it a few years ago on NPR. The fact that no one in our government/military followed through on her reporting bodes poorly for a country which successfully took the beaches of Normandy.

She had reported that the Taliban were gradually working their way towards Khandahar. That the corruption of the government was so bad, she had to bribe 2 people just to pay a bill! She said the people would not side with the government against an armed Taliban. Between corruption of the government and the Taliban's brutality, they would do nothing to help the government. And thus it is today. Do you think people will stick out their necks for a promise to change? What does it say about our leadership?

We are too worried about our manhood...and the future of the Democratic party...to leave. We went after Al Qaeda, not the Taliban. Reports are that there are less than 100 in Afghanistan. WE WON!!!
There, now that victory has been declared we should begin an orderly withdrawal of our forces.
If they decide to replace Karazi with the Taliban, so be it.
At a party on Saturday I talked with a man who has had two sons serve over there. He grew up as a military brat and he said the new surge is insane. This is a card carrying Republican with two sons who are officers. Except for the GOP skewering the President if he withdraws, there is almost no reason to stay that makes sense.
Instead we'll sentence folks to die for a couple of more years until we decide that this whole war was a mess.

What I find absurd is that the blogmaster would make the comparison of goals between two said countries and clain we Americans have not met the nobel ideals.

What I find absurd is that we leave Afgahistan to the crazies as even shakedown artists do not kill you.

What I find absurd is why people are against "nation building" - it has worked in the past and has made this the country it is.

What I find absurd is how the blogmaster would throw David Letterman under the bus yet give advice to Tiger, Magic et al.

I met Mrs. Woods - although I did not know it at the time and found her to be unbelievably beautiful, warm, friendly and very desirable.

What I find absurd is that it took this long for the truth to come out as in my world it was common knowledge for many, many years.

This much spent & the "greatest military in the world" cant get one man. If he owed taxes the IRS would have him tomorrow. If he just turned 50 thr AARP would have sent him an application last week.
Get out of EVERYWHERE now.
