It’s on

In case you were wondering when the GOP was going to start making good on Mitch McConnell’s promise to do everything possible to sabotage the Obama administration I think the answer is, “they have.”

Senator Jon Kyl, the GOP leader on negotiations with the White House over the START treaty has backed out of his deal to approve the treaty signed by the President and Medvedev. He declined to be interviewed when asked by the Times, he offers only a one paragraph explanation on his web site that says nothing, and the only thing I’ve read or heard all day as a rationale says they want more money than the extra $4 billion they squeezed out of Obama already.

So apparently stopping nuclear war is not as important as a Republican victory in ’12, and we’ll now have an even bigger budget hole to plug. I can hardly wait to see what’s next.

*******

Tom Freidman had an interesting piece today about Anderson Cooper challenging Michele Bachmann’s assertion on his show that the President’s trip to China was costing $200 million a day. I wish he’s taken her on on the air, but at least it got challenged the next day.

*******

There were five more U.S. KIA soldiers listed in the paper today. The oldest was 28. There were two 20-year-olds. But at least we got a full and spirited debate from our political leaders this election cycle.

Consider just how polarized the country has become that a public statement on position was not deemed necessary. No doubt right wing media have long since formulated a rock solid stance on it. No need to bother to discuss it with the rest of the country. If the left wing has its hypocrites, at least those in the middle can see that the far right aren't wearing pants either. Will the middle remember this come elections in 2012?

Hello.

Hello.

Is anybody home?

We're at War? Not according to the last election in my district. I watched TV and one guy voted down the line with Pelosi/Reid/Obama and the other guy defrauded people at some point in his career. Their positions on a war must have been delivered after I went to bed. Or it was part of the 100+ robo calls I received and hung up on.

I love the fact that Boehner can't seem to get any of the right wingers like Bachmann, Steve King from Iowa to serve on the House Appropriations committee. This is the committee that has real influence on reducing spending. Seems like these tea party douche bags would rather complain and bitch rather than actually do something. What a shock!

Same stuff, different day, different party in power. It will be interesting to see how the policy on earmarks plays out-so far Mitch McConnell is maintaining his position while Harry Reid, bolstered by getting re-elected is expounding on the value of earmarks to the economy. Just like Wheel of Fortune, the politicians will keep spinning the wheel until the taxpayers end up on the "Bankrupt" space. Can I buy a Federal Building for my district, Pat?

The popular opinion is this time it will be different, that politicians will remember the huge losses by the Democrats in the election of 2010 and be accountable to the taxpayers. If that were true, the Democrats would have remembered how they came into power in 2008 and governed differently. The consequences for Nancy Pelosi are she will probably lose her personal military jet to ride back and forth to California. Life is good.

The only things that are changing in Washington are some of the names on the placecards at the state dinners.

FYI: Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, six former secretaries of state (from both parties), five former secretaries of defense (from both parties) and seven former nuclear weapons commanders endorse the treaty.

Too much information from too many random sources..this would have been the lead story on every nightly news show, and the front page of every responsible newspaper in America. Where is David Halberstam when you need him? And Ariana H ain't him. Welcome to the Apocalypse.

Well, Dennis, clearly the people endorsing this treaty hate America and are just members of the "Eastern elite" that just "don't get it". That's their answer and if could explain it to me I'd appreciate it.

Tonight, I heard a pundit on the right say that the GM bailout was bad because preventing GM's collapse deprived other auto makers of the talent which would have been available to other auto makers had GM gone under. That's like saying ending capital punishment is socialism because it deprives funeral homes work.

The right is PO'ed that detainees are being tried in civil courts because evidence is being denied because it was obtained through torture. Hello America. Wake up and smell the coffee: water boarding is torture. Torture is bad for people and bad for America.

I loved Bush's statement that his lawyer told him that waterboarding was not torture so he used it. Then he said defensively that it had only been used three times.
If it is an effective technique for protecting our country, and it isn't torture, then why would you only use it three times? Could there be a little, we all know my lawyer gave me that answer I wanted so let's minimize the usage just in case?
