Dear Commissioner Goodell:

Commissioner Roger Goodell
National Football League
280 Park Avenue
New York, NY 10017

Dear Commissioner Goodell:

I've had a belly-full of bad behavior by professional athletes, and I have no special love for Michael Vick nor any team for which he played. Furthermore, I think what he did to his dogs was despicable.

Never-the-less, I’m writing to urge you not to impose any additional penalties on him that would impede his ability to earn a living in his chosen profession. Mr. Vick has been punished by the proper authorities, and by any reasonable standard, punished harshly. The NFL has no moral authority to punish him further.

If, as suggested in this week's Sports Illustrated, you plan to make your decision based on whether or not he feels "deep remorse" for his deeds, I also request that you send me six numbers between 1 and 56 that I can play in next week’s Mega Millions drawing, as I could sure use your insight; my kid's birthdays just aren't bringing home the bacon. PETA's Ms. Newkirk, who wants to subject Vick to a brain scan to see if he is "capable of remorse," places her faith in neuroscience, but I’ll take good old-fashioned ESP any day.
Sometimes the best PR play is to just do the right thing. Let him play.

Go Browns.

Sincerely

d’blank

let him play for the Raiders. I would love to go to a Browns game just to heckle him.Does anyone actually think he can still be a starting NFL QB.

Thanks Dennis. I love dogs.
Hate what Vick did to the dogs.
But think the law did more than it needed to do.

A local teenage cheerleader in Tampa is going to get off without ANY jail time for a hit and run death, yet Vick went to jail.

UGh, I have lived to long.

Contrast Vick's punishment with the community service the NFL player who killed someone received. Why does this country (specifically the PETA people) have more regard for animals than people. Seriously, I wish someone could explain.

Vick has come across as a self centered jerk...hardly a unique trait for a NFL QB...and was convicted of dog fighting.
While far from an admirable form of amusement, it pales in comparison to the dui, spousal abuse and drug abuse of many in the sports world.
He went to VaTech, reason enough for me to hate him, but if he is punished anymore it is nothing but piling on and a flag should be thrown on the commish.

Compared to his little brother Marcus, Michael is Jimmy Stewart in "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington". South of Richmond and north of Orlando, dog fighting isn't all that unusual. Although Vick took it to an extreme, he's served his time (considered a very harsh sentence in some "communities" in the south). Let him play if he can get a shot.

I agree with Kgwhit observation about Va Tech.

d'Blank, Do you have inside information that Vick is going to sign with the Browns? Just wondering?

OK, KG/Birdman
what's up with the anti VaTech stuff? I am no fan of ANY Big East/ACC or any other football team East of the Appalachans.
I know a couple of techies from VaTech and they are decent people.
Being a left coastie, i am out of the rite coast priorities.

VA Tech is, without a doubt, the engineering school of choice for the Old Dominion. It is also the choice of athletes with no more than 3 nor less than 1 felony convictions (we have to draw the line somewhere). They make Florida State look like Stanford. Besides, I pay out of state tuition to University of Maryland and reserve the right to trash other ACC opponents.

VaTech has become something of a halfway house for felons in Southern Virginia. They do a great job of keeping many of the potential muggers off the streets and on the gridiron, and for that we are grateful.
Beamer seems like a good guy but the constant taunting of his gang bangers has gotten old.

throw this dude in the CLINK and let him stay for another 10 years. once a thug, always a thug. you can take the thug outta the ghetto but you can't take the ghetto outta the thug. Goodell has one mission: protect the NFL shield. Why on earth would he risk the shield on this moron?

d'blank said...

Because this is America and he is not the judge or jury?

you would risk your league or career on this guy? if Vick goes out and kills more dogs or beats his kids or girlfriend or commits another insanely stupid and evil crime, what would Goodell tell America? if i'm him, i keep vick right where he belongs...out of the stadiums and on the streets. after all, if he's such a great guy, he'll find a job in the booth.

My point is that this is a country of laws. Vick was convicted and sentenced. he did his time. he paid the price society demanded. the NFL has no right to now deny him the right to make a living. If he does something new then he can be punished again – but you can’t punish him in advance for something he hasn’t done yet.
