Why America is doomed

Not sure what your point is. That it's sad America is taking so much interest in a dead guy whose life was so singularly bizarre that if you read it as fiction, you'd dismiss it as too far-fetched?
Maybe it is sad, but it's natural. PT Barnum wouldn't have been surprised.
I think it's because MJ's now gone and there's no longer any need to shudder at the possibility he's doing creepy things or worse with children, that people are now free to indulge their fascination with his talent and fiscal irresponsibility and obvious racial and sexual identity confusion.
On Friday, Mrs Palin said that she had decided to resign as governor after prayerful consideration led her to the conclusion that sacrificing her title would help Alaska the most.
Note: I deleted it to re-edit it, missing a key word!
Hypocrisy: wrote songs about black as beautiful but voted with his plastic surgery to morph into a white guy.
Morally bankrupt: used his position and money to lure children into his bed and obtain Rx drugs for personal use.
He got the idea to buy the Beatle's songbook from Sir Paul. He then beat Paul to his own music.
A star in our culture's constellation where there is no distinction between art and artist. That's why I like the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Most artists in it are long dead and I don't have an opportunity to understand or deal with their personalities.
Don't you just love Al Sharpton preaching about hypocrisy and the black community closing ranks around a pedophile while opposing gay marriage?
I really don't get this. Except for intermittent appearances on Court TV and the Surgery Channel, we haven't heard from this guy for the better part of 20 years. He ups and dies of God-knows-what at the ripe old age of 50 and we're subjected to non-stop analysis of his "timeless impact" on our culture. Jesus!!! What a country.
Hey,layoff the kid. Dont let some great dance music get lost in some rumors of child abuse. What the hell, he was aquitted, twice. You want scary: Tiny Tim,Dennis Rodman,Captain Beefheart, Chuck Berry,Laura Bush,Barbara Bush,Dick Cheney, Dr. Demento,Ann Coulter, anyone younger than 25 yrs old running the country.
To be solicitous of the dearly departed, we had the death of a huge music legend, whose star fell some twenty years ago. He admitted that he liked to have little children sleep in his bed. He also held little children out of windows and had them put masks on when in public. He became almost a Howard Hughes type recluse for a number of years until he announced a final tour. The few times he has been seen in public over the last decades, he physically morphed into an unrecognizable figure who talked with the voice of a ten year old girl. I cannot fathom how people can be this taken with his death. I suspect that MSNBC will have a camera at the crypt to record when he rises from the dead.
Just another freak in the box. the black community needed their Elvis well they got him. In the name of Oberman and of the Post and of Rachel Maddow RIP JACKO
Hello gents and ladies. The real world calls and this blog is as real as I can handle. Michael could dance, but after Thriller he wasn't. Sorry he died, but parents world-wide are breathing easy. to gaga-- Capt. Beefheart and Laura Bush ? How dare you. I heard Mick liked the sway of Laura's booty and the Capt. had an entourage that was something to behold, led by a bare-breasted gal with the American eagle and flag tatted across her chest. I hope to dream of her once more in my life. Good day my old friends.
Captain Beefheart made some great records. Irritating and dischordant, for sure, but fasinating. Can't dance to 'em though.
I have to say, though I just listened to a news clip of Jackson's 11 year old daughter at his funeral crying about what a great dad he was and how she loved him. And I felt kind of bad about posting something snotty about the guy earlier on this thread. Say nothing but good of the dead, as they say; there's always someone whose heart broke when they passed.
My apologies to fellow bloggers & Chuck Berry. Remove his name from my list, insert Little Richard. Our generations Michael Jackson look the other way thing, Jim Brown. We still sing his praises & sang them loud while he was throwing his wife off the balcony.
I can't abide Captain Beefheart on a list with those other names. You may never have put in enough time listening to go from difficult to inspired genius. Any person who could put Japan in a dishpan gets a gold star.
Don't despair for critiquing the dead. His reckless behavior left her an orphan. He proved not to be such a wonderful parent in spite of all the hype. Even a broken analog clock is correct twice a day.
Seriously, are you going to accept an eleven year-old girl's opinion on what a good parent is? It sucks she won't have her father around in one sense, but in another, she's never really had a father - just an over-grown little brother from the sounds of it. His death is probably a greater blessing to those kids than his continued existence would have been.
He was a first class freak and I never understood the world's fascination with him. The same people who love Obama, coincidentally.
Nik, there is a difference between opinion and fact:"The same people who love Obama, coincidentally." From where I sit and stand, your view of the world is parochial. Is your world shattered because John and Sarah would have marched us out of the swamps and we would be lighting cigars with $20 bills by now?
I’d like to suggest that we’re talking about the wrong thing here. For reasons that are not that difficult to understand, many African-Americans feel it is necessary to defend members of their community regardless of their flaws. But occasionally misguided clan loyalty is hardly unique in human history. What I don’t understand, and what really troubles me, is the way popular culture, manifesting itself through the media, becomes so totally besotted by something like Michael Jackson’s death. It feels like a mass sickness to me. I felt the same way when Tim Russert died. It wasn’t quite as bad, and I do think Tim had far fewer bad habits, but it was stunning overkill. What does this incredible need to either elevate people to god-like status, or to tear them to shreds if the opportunity arises, say about our culture? In less than a year MJ will be just be a product line within a division of Viacom that operates a MJ Theme Park at Neverland Ranch, and sells sequin gloves and DVDs that will teach you to moonwalk. Meanwhile we’ll be overdosing on someone else in the same sick and pointless fashion.
Hankster, my point is that these people are easily distracted by shiny objects and a good song and dance. They love the superficial and don't look past the well-polished exterior and accept the words fed to them at face value.
Nik, like Dennis brought up, we are flawed as a species. But we are also capable of greatness. Fred Astaire called Michael Jackson to complement his dancing. I defer to Fred Astaire when it comes to dancing. Perhaps this frenzy over MJ would not be quite so large if the flames were not being fanned by those who have an economic interest in seeing a profit.
It is possible the hype seems greater because there are so many media outlets. When Lennon was killed there was no internet and cable was in its infancy. Howard Cosell announced his death on Monday night football. At that time we learned of things through the big three network news show and local news along with a paper that came out once a day. Now the cable outlets and the internet news sites spew crap out 24 hours a day and it seems like it won't go away. I worked during MJ's memorial service, but had I been inclined I could have gone to a streaming online site to watch it. Had those options been there 30 years ago, I'd have watched Lennon's funeral. And anyone who married Yoko was pretty weird.
And the marketing that is likely to follow MJ's passing will be endless. There are reports that McDonald's already has a Michael Jackson happy meal under development:
A fifty year-old slab of beef nestled between two ten year-old buns...
The attempt to rehabilitate MJ's image is fueled by financial interests. The interested parties include his estate, his recording company, his publishing company, etc. Everyone at his funeral will have their hand outsooner or later. Like Elvis, MJ is worth more dead than alive.

Amen, brother.

James Brown was the black Elvis -- too bad he didn't name one of his kids Blanket; maybe he would have been seen as more artistic.
"Captain Beefheart"?

This all reminds me of the old joke - "But what about all the good things Hitler did?"
Everything we see & hear in the media is about selling something.
