More cowbell

How much more excitement can retirement offer than last night? It’s hard to imagine. I met McRik, BD, Richie, Marshall, Johnnie and Eddie - the Prowlers - at the upstairs bar at City Crab. We threw done a few oysters and a couple see-throughs before heading over to the Techline Basement Lounge where the band store their gear and hold their weekly practice sessions.

I love basement acoustics and Techline was sounding pure as the band tore through The Ballad of John and Yoko, Pretty Woman, Messin’ Around, and Makes No Difference. Then it was a couple of originals: Strange Love (I had her photograph - I had to tear it in half) and Prisoner of Love (a Prowler “greatest hit”).

Somewhere around this point in the evening McRik gave me the cowbell, a well-worn stick and a mandate to have at it. From there it was a joyous ride down sensory lane via What Does It Take, Wild Nights, Walkin’ the Dog, Live Forever, Tequila, and a big finish with I Don’t Need No Doctor.

It was a tight, twelve-number set. The first half was just a little weak for want of adequate cowbell, but we built to a strong finish. Tequila was my favorite as there was a cowbell solo. I am now lobbying to have (Don’t Fear) the Reaper added to their repertoire, as it is, of course, the sin qua non of cowbell-driven rock. The Prowlers will be at the Ace of Clubs on Great Jones Street in the Village on Saturday January 23rd. I will be back in Florida by then – not sure who will be on cowbell.

I always loved your cowbell playing!

If the Great Jones Cafe is still there, the cajun martini will hurt you.

Maybe you can play the cowbell via podcast from Florida during the 1/23 show. Just have a flat screen up where you would normally stand.
They can't take a chance on a stand-in cowbeller. It could doom the Prowlers future with a rank amateur on stage.

You idiot! Back in FLA. You must loooove those early dinners, golf pants and drivers who cannot see over the steering wheel. xo

You were the best combo air drummer / keyboard player i ever saw. Your solos from the Gville house living room with The Electric Knives are unforgetable. You could switch from Santana to Alvin Lee w/o missing the beat. Put another dime in the juke box baby.

Not to mention "Careful with that axe Eugene". (pink floyd - Umma Gumma)

THE BROWNS BEAT THE STEELERS! What is a Prowler groupie going to do in Florida?

I watched the SNL clip with Will Farrell and Christopher Walken again. I can really see d'blank in Will Farrell's role. Watch it again, very funny.

Oops, I meant Ferrell

Don't Fear the Reaper is the ultimate cowbell song? No way. Have you forgotten Mississippi Queen? Cowbell as destiny.

Or for that matter, Time Has Come Today by the Chambers Brothers. Or Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except Me and My Monkey from the Beatles White Album.

I can't believe anybody else remembers Careful With That Axe Eugene. Lots of screaming, but don't remember any cowbell....

d'Blank your cowbell skills were indeed surprisingly on that nite, though the tinis left you confused about the true nature of the song you call "Tequila" (it was a vaguely sound-alike original by Greg, the composer of Strange Love. Since the Daily Blanksters are clearly a cowbell lovin crowd ("time has come today" may be the song that is MOST carried thru-out by a bell, though beginning of "Honky Tonk Woman" is in the top 5 of opening bells), I will simply point out this: Blank's unique skill is not in the direct slamming of the bell, which requires a consistent sense of rhythm (possible but not after 2 tinis). His special gift was to clang the bell by banging the stick INSIDE it. You had to hear it. twas muy bueno.

True. There is no cowbell in Careful with that Axe Eugene but Dblank's performance of this classic Pink Floyd diddy is truly memorable.

The "Axe" has nothing to do w/ bells It was the 1st xperience w / performance art for many of us . & scared the crap out of me!

Birdman said...

That's just because Dblank played the part of Eugene.

Squirrel played Eugene.

My memory of the events are, understandably, a bit hazy (so to speak).

For 5 seconds I thought I was Sharon Tate.
