I’m taking the week off

I’m taking the week off to go back to the lake. I’ll be watching the convention and season one of The Wire -- not to mention the closing ceremonies of the Olympics. I hope they have more fake children.

My Olympic hero so far is David Nevill of the US who dove at the finish line of the 400 meter final, doing a swan dive onto the track in a successful, desperation effort to win the Bronze medal. I could hear inside his head: “Man, four years of work to get to the Olympics – I’m leaving nothing in the tank!”

What is the big deal about the Chinese women gymnasts? Is the idea that if only we could have brought our 12-year-olds we’d have won more gold?
See you in September. Joe Biden should have said several things worth comment by then.

The gymnastic community believes that younger gymnasts have an advantage over older gymnasts due to their lower weight and increased flexibility. However, young gymnasts are more prone to injuries due to their immature musculoskeletal systems. Some of the injuries are permanent and result in life-long disability. The age limit is used to protect the younger athletes until their bodies and strength matures.

Oh. Well, more importantly, why haven't they shown a minute of men's basketball in prime time while giving us start-to-finish coverage of both men's and women's marathons? Two plus hours of Ethiopian joggers gets old. Give me some LeBron.

Lebron has come out of olympic basketball as the clear winner. He has presented himself as the obvious leader of this team and has. through sheer will and talent, refused to allow this team to even come close to losing. He is mature, thoughtful, and has struck a patriotic tone you don't often, if ever, hear from the NBA.

I've often been a critic of his nailbiting, whining at every foul antics. But I'm on board now. This guy is the real deal. Just hope he doesn't chase the money and go to Europe.

Oh, and screw the Chinese. They warehouse their children in athletic gulags with no regard as to the impact that it will have on their lives. They work these kids until they find the few that can perform their particular sport or routine to mechanical perfection. This is for the sole purpose of glorifying China.

I almost forgot. My son ran track in high school in Northern Va. In the state meet in his junior year he was in the same heat as a guy from Wilson High School in Southeastern Va. named Lashawn Merritt. I saw him blow out the field in every event he was in. He was truly a man among boys. Turns out he was actually pretty good.

I happen to love women of asian decent - I think they are the most beautitul women in the world...the Chinese girls looked a little young. FINE, who cares really.

Have a good time at the lake, ponder some thoughts and get back to us.

Thanks for the Goulardi reference- I had forgotten him and Fuldhiem.

The ban on younger girls is not to protect them. They don't want it to be a sport that you are out of by the time a girl reaches puberty.

My daughter was a competitive figure skater who started at 9. She trained all the time and could do two triple jumps. Her freshman year in high school she had to have her ankle repaired because the cartiledge was so frayed that she had bone rubbing on bone. So you work too hard whether olympic quality or not.

At 15 she was upset because she had to learn to do her jumps all over, but little 11 year old girls were smaller and could jump better. She was all of 5' 5", way too big for a competitive skater.

The Federation of International Gymnastics (FIG) raised the age limit for gymnastic competition to 16 in 1997. This was in response to concerns about injuries to the younger athletes. For more details on this matter read The Physisian and Sportsmedicine Vol 25 No 3 March 1997 or go to physsportsmed.com/issues/1997/03mar/nb_gym.htm

Woody. I let my subscription to Physician and Sportsmedicine lapse and didn't save my back issues. As in all things, I'll take your word for it. Rangers are ususally right about this stuff.

My only point is raising the age limit doesn't stop 12 year old girls from training to excess.

This Sarah Palin pick is going to be a disaster for McCain. The news today that her 17 year-old daughter is pregnant comes as quite a window into this woman's character. We'll have to take the McCain campaign's word for it that they knew about this (I sincerly doubt it though). This means that Sarah Palin knew this and chose to put her daughter through the public scrutiny and humiliation that will certainly come. That's some real family values for you.

My daughter is in crisis and I choose to abandon her (I think running for vice president will be pretty much a full time job at least) to serve my own ambition.

Not to mention her views on creationism. Who gets to ask her if she thinks the Flintstones is a documentary?

This woman will bring down McCain's campaign. Nice job John!!

If McCain's people did not know about this then they aren't doing their job.

If they did know, why have they dispatched a team up to Alaska to "manage" the story?

Nice parenting on Sarah Palin's part. My 17 year old is pregnant out of wedlock and I think I will run for Veep where everyone in the country will find out about it. Way to protect your kids privacy. Is this the Palin family or the Spears family?

If McCain's people really knew about this, then they should be given the boot. Does Tom Eagleton come to mind...that worked out pretty well for McGovern.

I think the point is that McCain is running on leadership/ experience. Putting SP on the ticket as VP when a major liability is his age/ mortality is literally spitting into the wind. Not that the voting public is all that rational: race is the wild card.
