Miscellaneous

The opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics was undoubtedly the greatest spectacle ever staged by human beings. It was both artistically breathtaking, and a technological marvel. My favorite part was the people dancing on the globe. David Brooks has a very interesting take on how they did it.

The Russians are getting pretty scary. The move into Georgia is frighteningly reminiscent of 1930s German behavior. Putin hasn’t gotten over the breakup of the USSR and now he seems intent on putting it back together country-by-country. I’d be very nervous if I were a Ukrainian.

Bill & Hill are going to give it one more shot in Denver. You have to give them some credit; for unrelenting, self-serving, self-promotion it would be hard to find any human being to match either of them. What were the odds that they’d find one another 40 years ago and still be hanging on to their piece of the center stage?

Are you as sick of hearing about Brett Farve as I am?

The Innocent Man,” is John Grisham's nonfiction book about "murder and injustice in a small town.” All I can say is you don’t want to be charged with a serious crime in this country unless you are rich. This is not a fair justice system. George Clooney just optioned the book.

I’m headed to Miami to visit the Seminole Tribe of Florida Gaming Authority, and my mother. Argue amongst yourselves for a few days.

Yeah the opening ceremonies were pretty spectacular. Especially the part that was computer generated for TV. I also like the fact that the little girl that sang the Chinese national anthem was lipsynching another little girls voice. The other little girl was deemed "too ugly" by the Chinese government to be seen on TV. That's quite a culture.

I'm still glued to the swimming, however.

Say hi to Mickey for me D.

The combination of spectacle, propaganda and China was too much for this trooper: I went to bed early. So far, I am underwhelmed with prime time beach volleyball and synchronized diving. This is not my vision of the Olympics. I would rather watch my toenails grow.

As to Georgia and Russia. What did they say when US citizens were pouring into what was to become Texas and Finland when the USSR invaded it? So close to: the United States/ Russia, so far from God. Russia has gas and we have hot air.

Jesus' blood and the reliability of our government to disappoint have been a couple of constants that I can rely on. And the Yankees to race to the bottom.

You two should start a law firm, Scrooge & Scrooge.

Yes, on the negativity of those two! But, adding my 2-negative cents, am I the only person in the history of history who loathes and has never watched a moment of the Olympics? The Georgia/Russia situation is just one more I cannot pay attention to despite the horrific implications. Finally what the hell will happen if "Hill" forces a roll call?

If Hillary gets a roll call vote at the convention it will be a devastating blow to the Obama campaign and will ensure her place in the pantheon of self serving politicians who are more than willing to take the country down if it will serve their ambitions. Admittedly it's a crowded field but she'll vie for the top slot with Tom Delay.

And what about Bill Clinton saying that nobody is really ready to be president after spending the entire primary crowing about how Hillary will be ready on day 1. What a crock!

How's that for negativity?

I only watch the real Olympic sports like swimming and track and field. You can have the rest.

Wow, those olympics were really something weren't they. Did you hear where what we saw on tv as all the fireworks weren't real, but rather a total animation of the fireworks event. That and 5000 collective drummers beating the hell out of individuality, it was quite a site.

Fenway, you and I are the only two in the US that haven't watched the Olympics. Not that I am willing to take a back seat to anyone in my love of 12 year old girls throwing themselves around on uneven bars. God life doesn't get any better than that.

And if beach volleyball is not the essence of sports then what is?

Birdman has a problem with an ugly Chinese girl, then why did Audrey Hepburn replace Julie Andrews in My Fair Lady? Was Julie considered too pretty and they wanted to give it to the ugly chick?

Call me a grumpy, old man. Call me Ebenezer. Just don't call me late for dinner. Propaganda and jingoism raise my body temperture. When I see those cute, little ribbon-like appliqués on the back of cars which say "Support the Troops," I see "Support the War." When I hear that a presidential candidate is criticized for not wearing a flag tie pin, I feel fire being fanned by people with an agenda. As Garrison Keillor once said in an opinion in the NY Times on flag burning; "The American flag should be protected. It should be protected from politicians from wrapping themselves in it."

If I was an athlete competing in Beijing, no doubt I would be seeing things differently. But as a distant spectator with Beijing marching in lock step and obvious manipulation by the state, for the state, I feel the heat.

The difference between Audrey Hepburn and Natalie Wood lip synching songs sung by others is that it wasn't Lyndon Johnson making the decision.

I'm with you all the way Hankster.

Clinton’s Name Will Be Put in Nomination
By Jeff Zeleny

Updated |12:25: Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton’s name will be placed into nomination at the Democratic National Convention, a symbolic move approved by the Obama campaign in an effort to soothe a lingering rift with Clinton supporters.

Can you effing believe it? We're all screwed

Hello Dennis,I had a great response but it got cx because I wasn't signed up. Anyhow will try to keep up and current. I found the opening ceremonies spooky, kinda like the collective mind of the Borg. Maybe something like Strom Thurmond and the dixiecrats storming out in 48 will happen. I think there is still alot of smart wealthy pissed off white women who want Hillary. I only remember a little bit of 68, My dad referred to the radicals as Hopheads! Oh,it sounds like Yankee and Redsox territory. In Wahoo nation we haven't but the pipe down, since we get close than fall five steps back dreaming of next year. Looking forward to conversing if you don't mind.mb
