Party like it's 1937

When I first started reading Paul Krugman some years ago I thought he was just another weenie liberal economist, but over the years I've been impressed with how often he has been right. I guess that's how you win a Nobel Prize. I think this makes it worth reading his opinion on reducing Federal spending now as the immediate stress of the downturn lessens. The deficit is certainly worrisome, but this doesn't sound too good either.

A number of you have already read David Brooks' column on The Geezer Crusade. It's a great column but it made me feel guilty for not doing enough.

So, Sunday is the official end of the Holiday Season. Buzzard will be taking down his tree. Time for the Super Bowl. I like both teams but I have to pick the Colts. Manning is too good and too experienced. We'll also have to suffer through a few hundred commercials, grossly overrated for their entertainment value. If they weren't on the SB they'd barely warrant a chuckle.

Even the SB has become political, with Tim Tebow and his mom promoting a pro life message. As usual, the left is its own worst enemy, making such a big deal over such a bland message has insured it will get maximum attention, and by demonstrating such a lack of confidence in their own message and by trying to stop the commercial from airing, they look weak and undemocratic
I may be the only one who cares, but I found another excellent blues podcast worth checking out. The Roadhouse podcast plays "the best blues you've never heard" for an hour every week. You can download it free from i-tunes. There is less talk than on Murphy's Saloon, but they do play a few commercials, which don't get in the way much. Murphy focuses on lesser know and new groups, while Roadhouse is more focused on lesser known cuts from top bluesmen. Both are excellent. New road music: Ray Wylie Hubbard. (above)

Finally, for all you Northeasterners who are getting ready to hunker down for the weekend, and who made fun of my move to Florida, I'd like to report that it is 80 degrees today and I just returned from the beach.

As bad as our outlook appears, we are still doing better than JD Salinger. Woody Allen mentioned the advantage of living in your apartment rather than achieving immortality thru your works.

The perfect storm which brought a man of color to the White House is now spinning eccentrically, disempowering leadership, failed as it has been, leaving few risk takers to steer the ship of state. And, these are dangerous waters.

d'blank,

Thanks for the weather dig. Cincinnati is a balmy 34 degrees with sleet, snow and freezing rain. 8" predicted for tonight. Enjoy the beach-you have earned it!

Colts by 10.

Ohioans' favorite words of the winter:

Pitchers and catchers report 2/21.

Oh God - you're turning into Dad with the weather reports. When Mom and Dad moved to Florida it was kinda funny for the first 100 times when he'd ask how cold it was in Michigan and then he'd tell you how nice and warm it was in Orlando.

There was one winter day when it was 35 in Detroit and 18 degrees in Orlando. I made sure I called and told him nice it was and how I had just came in from laying out in the sun.

He never gave me a weather report again.

My guess is that you forgot how annoying it is to hear a weather report from Florida. Why don't you stay there untill August and report. Try not to get mugged and watch out for sharks. Say hello to all the rednecks with thier rebel flags. Go Saints but me thinks Manning is just too good.

I've always hated people who move to Florida and then give you the weather report every day, but in the end -- it's irresistible. (it's only 63 today and a little windy for my taste.)

I'm about 1/3 of the way thru shovelling out of the biggest snow I've ever seen. 23 inches of snow in Washington and still coming down. It's a good thing we're used to it. Schools won't open until St. Patrick's day.

Make sure you put on a sweater for the chilly evening. It might dip below 60.

i'm a little worried about the hydrangeas.

It is a sad day. The end of the long, arduous holiday season beginning in November with the OSU/Michigan game ending with SBXLIV. Looking back on visiting freinds and family, enduring 40 some bowl games (does anyone remember the Mieneke Car Care Bowl?)
It all comes down on one game.
While my head goes with the Colts, my heart is with the Saints.
No defense can stop these 2 QB's. It will come down to a Darren Sharper interception or a Reggie Bush punt return.
However, It's all about Cool Brees. Full disclosure, he is a fellow alum. Although he has contributited a bit more to our Alma Mater. Several years ago he donated a cool 2 mil to the Drew and Brittany Brees Student Athlete Academic Center. Btittany, another Alum, was born in Cleveland.

Who Dat! Drew Dat! Geaux Saints!

D, you should not be so harsh on the ad community. I am looking forward to the Census Bureau ad encouraging us to fill out the forms. So America, time to stand up and be counted!

Come Monday a new season begins! The 72nd Annual Natioanl Collegiate Athletic Association Division I Men's Basketball Championship. Hopefully you ad folks can come up with a catchier name.
Tuesday the titans of the midwest clash for dominance of the Big Ten.
The Boilermakers visit the Spartans - 6pm Pacific on ESPN.
Be there. It's a start of a new season and you can forget about your team having lost SBXLIV

I will take the Colts by 7 points. But I will not be unhappy if the Saints win. If Freeney does not play, the Colts win by 3. It has been a cold winter in North Carolina. We have snow on the ground. Since this is dBlank's first winter in the South he can be forgiven for his enthusiasm about the weather. I predict that we will witness a change in his outlook on life as the increase in sunlight cures his Seasonal Affective Disorder(SAD).

The Saints played a great game and won. I think everyone except Colts fans are pleased with the result. I was horrified watching The Who at halftime. Townsend had a wardrobe malfunction and his belly kept protruding through the bottom of his shirt. Daltrey looked and sounded horrible-thank God for lip-syncing! Do they have to parade these old groups in front of the camera and ruin our memories? It is comparable to Ann Margaret,at age 79, making a sex tape and putting it on YouTube. Our memories and imagination are so much better! CBS probably chose The Who because they do the theme song for CSI Miami. Now we have to wait 7 months until football returns.

Couldn't agree more about the Who and heard the same from several others. Thank God none of us aged that badly -- right? Of course we couldn't afford the same drugs these guys had. Hopefully this puts an end to having '60's groups at halftime. Enough.

Everyone picked the Colts so of course the Saints won it. Great game. Can't wait for September. Browns in '12!

Great game.
Queen Latifah was sensational.
Carrie Underwood, underwhelming.
Commercials uniformly sucked.
The Who (Daltry and Townsend) were soooo sad.
Brees was amazing.
Peyton's onsides kick was brilliant.
And how about Garrett Hartley!

The idea of the Who at the Super Bowl seemed bad and turned out worse. Pete's wardrobe malfunction offended my senses a helluva lot more than Janet's.
Next year give everyone an ipod and let them listen to whatever the hell they want to. Although a mediocre Elvis impersonator would sound better than the Who.
Folks around here cleaned out the food stores when we were slated for 2 feet of snow. They are saying 10-20" tomorrow and that should empty the shelves in the liquor stores.
