I thought he'd been dead for years.
I once saw Bo, along with The Diddlettes, in high school playing as one of the acts in Dick Clark's Caravan of Stars. Also saw The We 5, Paul Revere and the Raiders, and The Byrds that night. I thought he sounded like The Who's Magic Bus. I guess I had that turned around.
I started getting into the original blues about 20 years ago and it was a real revelation to me to discover that all the rock n' roll I loved came from Bo, Muddy, John Lee and the other old blues men. Another example of the baby boomers thinking we invented everything, I guess.
I grew up in at the beach in Charleston SC. Starting freshman year in high school (because booze was illegal there was no minimum drinking age and one could get a driver's license at age 14!!!) we used to go to the juke joints to see the actual bands/singers who couldn't record because they were black. They all had covers recorded of their songs. I've seen 'em all at Big John's, The Sands, Seaside . . . oh, typical boomer thinking if I wasn't there it didn't happen . . .
The best -- that square guitar, the hambone beat, dark glasses and black hat!!
Another one of the true legends hits the high road. If this keeps up the Stones and others won't have anyone to redo songs from. Your comment about who really wrote and performed many of the breakout R&R songs is too true. Even though we boomers didn't invent it I believe we enhanced their popularity.
I saw Bo play with Phish 4 or 5 times over the years, mostly in outdoor summer weekend long concerts and he was fantastic. You could also tell how much Phish respected him as a world class musician and blues man! The crowd always went crazy for Bo!
I have never seen him perform.
