A brief digression for “Liar of the Week”

From today’s New York Times front page:

"Representative Charles B. Rangel said on Wednesday that “cultural and language barriers” had hindered him from understanding the finances of his Dominican Republic beach house, and vowed to repay several thousand dollars in federal taxes he owes after failing to report $75,000 in rental income from the villa.

At a Capitol Hill news conference, during which he was by turns remorseful and combative, the congressman said that he had not been aware of the income and unpaid taxes in part because he had trouble getting detailed financial statements from the resort’s managers in the Dominican Republic.

“Every time I thought I was getting somewhere, they’d start speaking Spanish,” Mr. Rangel said.

The explanation was greeted with skepticism and surprise by some people in his district, where Spanish is the primary language in nearly half the households and even Mr. Rangel’s own Congressional Web site can be instantly translated to Spanish with just two clicks of a computer mouse."

Congressman Rangel is the Chairman of the House Ways and Means committee and a lawyer. Earlier this year it was discovered that he held leases on three rent controlled apartments in his New York City residence in violation of New York law. You can read the whole story here.

Seems like Charlie is following in the noble footsteps of his predecessors. Dan Rostenkowski was also a chairman of this august committee. I don't know who the republicans have been, but I'm sure they're stand-up guys.

Rangel's the embodiment of Harlem politics -- corrupt and avaricious without a speck of concern for the community.

someone please send Al Qaeda Rangel's dominican pied-a-terre address and his next time of arrival.

I understand his problem completely, try ordering lunch in Denver.

He can't understand him when he talks, does anyone think the people in the Dominican Republic have a clue what he is asking for, unless it is a kickback.

ay (another woman) is correct - Rangel appears to be the latest in a long line of Harlem politicians (oh, and there are a few from Roxbury I can think of) (and, yes, they are all Democrats) who are corrupt to the core yet keep getting re-elected by their constituents perhaps because they bring home the pork.

But I digress. A friend suggested the following:

If you spend 3 years as a community organizer growing your organization from a staff of 1 to 13 and your budget from $70,000 to $400,000, then become
the first black President of the Harvard Law Review, create a voter registration drive that registers 150,000 new African American voters, spend 12 years as a Constitutional Law professor, then spend nearly 8 more years as a State Senator representing a district with over 750,000 people, becoming chairman of the state Senate's Health and Human Services committee, then spend nearly 4 years in the United States Senate representing a state of nearly 13 million people, sponsoring 131 bills and serving on the Foreign Affairs, Environment and Public Works and Veteran's Affairs committees, you are woefully inexperienced.

If you spend 4 years on the city council and 6 years as the mayor of a town with less than 7,000 people, then spend 20 months as the governor of a state with 650,000 people, then you've got the most executive experience of anyone on either ticket, are the Commander in Chief of the Alaska military and are well qualified to lead the nation should you be called upon to do so because your state is the closest state to Russia?

Ok so the BO/Joe show gets elected.A big worry seems to be a supreme court nominee. So with a democratic majority a conservative judge seems out of the question. Liberal judges seem to be everywhere but Texas.Way to much is given to Roe vs Wade.Women also have the right to be prostitutes but its not legal except in Nevada. The issue is a sad commentary. Be responsible, Leave Roe vs Wade or repeal it makes no difference to me. poor people don't have abortions. they have the babies so we can support them.Gun control, if its ever made illegal it will make the drug trade look like kiddyland. I don't own a gun. Where we are in American Society will only worsen with liberal laws. There is enough crime on the streets now ,lets not make it worse, by increasing their rights especially the pedophiles. THats where I have a problem. A woman can terminate life but has issues with infringements on the rights of criminals. You can reform drug addicts/alcoholics/petty thieves. You don't come back from murder/rape or child molestation SORRY. Convicted felons of serious felonies should consider drawing breath their only priveledge.Oh, and tape my phone I could care less,If I was talking to Denny's Uncle it might even be amusing to them but no crime.Corruption/favoritism/stupidity exists on both sides. I guess I would rather believe Charlie's communication blunder than the b.s. about needing a wide stance in an airport bathroom stall.Ladies and gentleman. you are already thinking globally,do any of you act locally?

While on the subject of "Liar of the Week," this from
http://www.politifact.org/truth-o-meter/statements/712/

Obama's one education accomplishment was "legislation to teach 'comprehensive sex education' to kindergartners."

An absurd claim about a bill that never passed

John McCain released an ad this week making the accusation that Barack Obama supports sex education for five-year-olds.

Here's what the ad says:

"Education Week says Obama 'hasn't made a significant mark on education,' that he's 'elusive' on accountability, a 'staunch defender of the existing public school monopoly.'

Obama's one accomplishment? Legislation to teach 'comprehensive sex education' to kindergartners.

Learning about sex before learning to read? Barack Obama. Wrong on education. Wrong for your family."

Here, we'll check the claim that Obama wants five-year-olds to learn about sex. We've checked what Education Week said in a separate item and found it Barely True.

The origins of this claim go back to Obama's days as a state senator in the Illinois General Assembly.

In 2003, the Assembly considered a bill to expand sex education directives from grades 6 through 12 to grades K through 12. The legislation required the curriculum to be medically accurate and include information on the prevention of HIV and contraceptives. It also said abstinence must be taught and that students "shall be encouraged to base their actions on reasoning, self-discipline, sense of responsibility, self-control, and ethical considerations, such as respect for oneself and others."

Most pertinent to the kindergarten allegation, the legislation states that "course material and instruction shall be age and developmentally appropriate."

Carol Ronen, the now-retired state senator who sponsored the bill, said its main intent was to make sure that teenagers got information that was "medically accurate," a requirement that wasn't then part of the school code. A secondary effect was to expand age-appropriate sex education down to lower grades, to allow things like teaching school children to avoid sex predators, Ronen said.

"Barack never had anything to do with it," she said. "This is a lot of hoopla."

Obama voted for the legislation in committee on a party-line vote. He was not a sponsor nor a co-sponsor, and the legislation never made it to a full Senate vote. So calling it one of his accomplishments is wrong, since it never became law and it wasn't his bill anyway.

This isn't the first time Obama has faced the "sex ed for kindergartners" charge. When Obama ran for the U.S. Senate in 2004, his opponent Alan Keyes used it. "Nobody's suggesting that kindergartners are going to be getting information about sex in the way that we think about it," Obama said at a campaign event in 2004. "If they ask a teacher 'where do babies come from,' that providing information that the fact is that it's not a stork is probably not an unhealthy thing. Although again, that's going to be determined on a case-by-case basis by local communities and local school boards."

Obama said that he did not support telling youngsters about explicit information about sex. The bill specifically mentions that instructional material must be age appropriate. It specifically mentions teaching children how to "say no to unwanted sexual advances" and "nonconsensual physical sexual contact." The legislation was not sponsored by Obama and it didn't pass, so calling it one of his "accomplishments" is absurd. We rate this claim Pants on Fire!

It's hard to know where to start with the absurd assertion that
"Liberal judges seem to be everywhere but Texas". 6 out of 9 supreme court justices were appointed by Repbuclicans. My wife is an attorney at the US court of appeals for the DC circuit and I can assure you that at least 3/4 of those judges were appointed by republicans. It's the same story in every district in the country. The claim that "liberal, activist judges" are legislating from the bench has about as much truth to it as the claim that Obama called Palin a pig.

As to the statement regarding abortion and poor people -- it's so absurdly preposterous and offensive as to not merit a detailed response.

Ok, then if the judges are not liberal then whats the problem with having a conservative bench? These judges all cant be lackeys of the corrupt rebuplican right.I'm asking. I do however know something about inner city poor and medical access. I'm not an attorney but a nurse who manages an ER.Medicaid does not pay for abortions unless the life in jepordy clause.thus no medical justification for stated procedure.37% percent of my patients are African American. The majority of African American women are pro life. The majority of young women I see finding out they are pregnant many for the first time want to keep their child. Yes,they have difficulty understanding the concept of pre natal care, yes they do not always follow up. Many are not going to be in the running for mother of the year. You my friend need to reign in your liberal think tank, put down the NYTimes/Washington Post.Your obtunded by the incessenant battle cry of the drive by.Do yourself a favor. Don't read anything but experience 1st hand.90% of Congress has no first hand knowledge of healthcare, only the cost. Thats sad. Abortions are a cash business. There is a difference in access on whether you can afford healthcare or not. my guess is ,at the very least you have an 80/20 plan that is either afforded to you by your employer or your wife's. I'm sure whatever Dr you want to see is not a problem. The Dr will see you in a couple of minutes Mr Birdman...

warrenout, do you actually read or have you ever read the NY Times? Hard to believe, but you don't have to be a member of the Communist Party to do so. They actually have a neo conservative and a moderate conservative Op Ed writer. You would be surprised at how many different ways people see the world.

Abortion is not a plausible or ethical policy for birth control. Among unjoined women it bespeaks unsafe sex among other things. But do you think women should not have an option to abort?
