John McCain's speech

"My friends, if you find faults with our country, make it a better one.

If you're disappointed with the mistakes of government, join its ranks and work to correct them.
Enlist in our armed forces.

Become a teacher.

Enter the ministry.

Run for public office.

Feed a hungry child.

Teach an illiterate adult to read.

Comfort the afflicted.

Defend the rights of the oppressed.

Our country will be the better and you will be the happier because nothing brings greater happiness in life than to serve a cause greater than yourself.

I'm going to fight for my cause every day as your president.

I'm going to fight to make sure every American has every reason to thank God as I thank him: that I'm an American, a proud citizen of the greatest country on Earth, and with hard work, strong faith and a little courage, great things are always within our reach.

Fight with me.

Fight for what's right for our country.

Fight for the ideals and character of a free people.

Fight for our children's future.

Fight for justice and opportunity for all.

Stand up to defend our country from its enemies.

Stand up for each other; for beautiful, blessed, bountiful America.

Stand up, stand up, stand up and fight.

Nothing is inevitable here.

We're Americans, and we never give up.

We never quit.

We never hide from history. We make history.

Thank you, and God bless you and God bless America."

I'm speechless. What more is there to say?

It is enough to make we want to slip back into my Marine Corps uniform and kill. We Marines do not to need to know why we are fighting, and sometimes who we are fighting, we just want to fight.

Happy to help out, John. Give me back 15% of my salary every two weeks and you'll start confusing me with Mother Theresa.

After listening to this current crop of Republicans this week, a disturbing image comes to mind. The image is that of a serial abusing husband pleading with his wife after his latest alcohol-fueled beating. The republicans are the abusive husband standing outside the house in a “wife beater” -shirt declaring his undying love for his battered wife (us) and promising never, ever to beat her again. “I’ll change honey. I promise.”

If we, like so many unfortunate women, let these thugs back in the house we deserve everything we get.

May be a bit harsh but its a harsh business.

Birdman, 95% shared voting record with George Bush by Mr. McCain completely validates your point. The converse, however, is 130 votes of "Present" by the man riding the donkey to Washington. So, your choice: Bad Decisions vs. No Decisions.

I'm not speaking of McCain per se. Although he's part of it. I'm speaking the republicans in general. They've been in charge for the past 8 years and, Lord knows, they could use a break.

I've fallen in love with birdman. What a great analogy. If we re-elect more of the same we deserve it. Again. As we deserved what we got with the re-election of he whose name shall never again be spoken.

As always, the best line of the night came from Stewart on the DS talking with Mike Huckabee:

'...So you feel your party is the only one that can fix the damage that your party has done.'

Fenway, be careful. I have seen the Birdman in an alcohol-fueled frenzy. I am not sure he wears "wife-beater" tee shirts.

Woody. You're just envious. And besides that was almost 40 years ago.

Birdman, 40 years ago it took a 12 pack to get a buzz. Now 2 beers after a round of golf is sufficient.

for me, presidential elections are fun - there is a certain buzz in the air. My first was gerald ford. I am not sure why other than I was in the USAF and it seemed appropiate as I looked to the person and not the politics....who do I want to represent me?

It was a simpilar time or so it seems. Eight years ago I wanted john vs george. in the primary this year I voted for rudy...tried and tested but the people with wisdom...old folks in FL voted john.

I dont have anything against BO other than his youth, hell he is younger than me. Same with Palin although I love the story of an unknown rising to the top. I love john stewart raising his hands like a touchdown screaming "I love this woman!" great TV!

I'm going with john and twenty years from now, I might be voting for BO.

You have to admire the GOP for the marketing of their brand. People think the country is going in the wrong direction, well vote for McCain to oust the DC elites.

You would have no idea the Republicans have controlled the White House for 20 of the last 28 years and have controlled Congress for most of the last 14.

The GOP has had almost total control of the government for years but somehow only liberals who have not been in power are the elites. P.T. Barnum was right.

As Gail Collins said this morning. If came from another planet, you'd think that John McCain had spent his entire life in a prison camp and released just in time to name Sarah Palin his vice president.

"whatever it takes"
(I think that was said by a Dem)

what has BO surrived that makes him a better choice than McCain.I really am not sure what he stands for other than a reshuffle of the new deal.Morality will never be legislated, by either party.I don't need anything BO is selling, why should I buy? Oh thats right I can go to bed at night feeling happy but poorer

warrenoutohio, "why should I buy?" This is an election that offers discernible options. 2 senators are running for President. Character and ideas are at issue. From your post you seem to be convinced this country has been on the right track on policy, just the wrong people are executing it. Do you think we can drill ourselves out of our energy problem? Do you feel Sarah Palin has the negotiating skills to deal with OPEC and get gas down to $2.50 a gallon?

Barack Obama might seem like a skinny guy with a slick tongue but he broke into Chicago politics and got himself elected as senator as an outsider. He skated rings around the Clintons in the primaries. He didn't get to be part owner of a major league team because his daddy was in the White House. Joe Biden has been a US senator for a long time. He hasn't been a governor for 20 months of a state which gets substantial oil revenue. If Obama dies in office Biden can keep the ship of state on even keel. If McCain dies, who do you think will be calling the shots? Palin's pastor? Karl Rove? You can praise the lord but you've got to be ready to pass the ammunition.

Drill out of oil to end our dependence on foreign oil is a mantra of the GOP. Unless I missed the memo, the oil companies are private businesses.

They owe nothing to the Government and everything to the stockholders. If it is cheaper to buy foreign oil than to drill here at home, they better buy the foreign oil.

The oil and gas industry sits on nearly 1,000 permits to drill right now. They haven't drilled for two reasons; one, there is not a shortage, and two, because it has been cheaper to buy on the open market.

We can allow them to drill anywhere there hearts desire but they will not drill if they can get the oil cheaper somewhere else.

No shortage? it's a relative concept so i guess there is no shortage if you don't mind $4 gas. i agree on the other point, so why not OK the permits? the day may come soon when economic or politics makes it worth drilling in remote places. we can at least get ready.
