Amazing minutia

This map labels each state with a country name, to which its GDP is approximately equal.

Interesting comparisons. It's hard to imagine that Belarus is equal to Alaska with all its oil and other natural resources.

How'd you like to be Portugal? Same economy as Kentucky. Is that counting illegal moonshine? If it isn't KY is way ahead of Portugal.

Belarus has almost 10 mm people; Alaska has under 1 mm.

I'd give KY the nod even though there is probably an illegal port trade in Portugal.

well I live in Florida and have toured Korea. Personally, when I was in Korea, the women were very friendly and for little money they made you feel like a king. In twenty years in florida, I have not gotten the vibe.

Does the GNP take that into consideration that aspect of life?

JDB - I don't think quality of life issues such as the willingness of the Korean comfort girls to "love you long time GI" are properly measured in within the current GNP paradigm.

Was the cost of the pougie bait factored into the net emotional profit?

Do you think the cost of country music will go up like the cost of gas when Tennessee's economy is on par with Saudi Arabia?

Saudi Arabia has a quarter of the world's oil reserves. And they are pumping it out of the ground. How could Tennessee match its GDP? Am I alone in questioning the data?

You forget, Hankster, that Jack Daniels (old No. 10) is made in Lynchburg, TN. It's about $100 a gallon and very popular.

If you guys are going to become sticklers for accuracy I’m going to have to find another hobby. I’m too lazy to get all the way to the bottom of this, but I can shed some light on the Tennessee vs. Saudi Arabia GDP question. According to the IMF, SA’s 2007 GDP was $376 billion. It’s harder to find Tennessee’s, in part because the definition of GDP seems to vary somewhat. (The IMF’s is: consumption + investment + government spending + (exports – imports = GDP).
That said, the latest and most reasonable sounding GDP I found for TN was $286 billion in 2006. Is that close enough for my goofball blog? Only you, dears readers, can say.

I just paid $5.15 per gallon for diesel fuel. Saudi Arabia should be poised to buy Tennessee. But if they are smart, they will beat us to alternative energy instead.
