As much as I enjoy the conversation we have here, it feels increasingly beside the point to me. We scold and ridicule the politicians on the right, and occasionally those on the left, as if they were different kinds of beasts – as if one side wants to do the right thing and the other side doesn’t.
We attribute policies to the left or to the right, but there is really only one party and one policy – the Greenback party whose policy is get mine now.
It takes millions to get elected to the House and tens of millions to the Senate. We allow candidates to take vast sums of money from organized business and labor interests, and they have to be paid back after the elections.
We allow those same powerful and wealthy special interest groups to write legislation that is hand deliver to Congress. We allow the ruling party in each state to draw the Congressional districts in ways designed to minimize competition, like McDonalds’ franchises. We permit the entrenched pols this system produces to rise in a seniority system that gives them disproportionate legislative powers and increased ability to divert tax dollars to support their own purposes. We’ve allowed them to create extra-Constitutional rules that limit debate and distort majority rule.
There isn’t a single problem facing this country that isn’t significantly the fault of both parties. This is the only political issue worth discussing. Marx said religion is the opiate of the masses; I say partisan political debate is pure Mexican brown smack.
There are not two parties struggling for power in America. There is just one formidable, two-headed monster and he is eating our children.

Would a strong 3rd party be a 3 headed beast or a step towards reform?
How do you enact real reform, removing money as influence in the election process when incumbents would have to cede their advantage by endorsing change?
A 3rd party would still be peopled by politicians who would need the dinero to even run. The heinous greed that permeates our society continues unabated. It's not going away and reform isn't going to happen in our lifetimes. How many Americans don't even vote. We missed our chance for reform in the 60's and '70's. The times were right and ripe. We rolled too many and were unable to see what we allowed to go up in smoke.
I don't think a third party changes anything if you still have to curry favor with lobbies in order to raise $3 mil to be the Congressman from Podunk.
A strong 3rd party will only ensure the primacy of one of the other major parties. If those crackpot tea party people form a new party it permanenttly cripple republicans (not a deal breaker for me). If the greens form a party, it will permanently cripple democrats.
The only way to take money out of the equation is bring back the issue of public financing and ban all gifts of more than $100. We also need to ban bundling and any other activity that could be perceived as a quid pro quo contribution.
Lest I be accused of crippling naivete, I see no way this will happen. But we can hope.
Birdman is absolutely correct. If the system stays the same, unlimited time to campaign and unlimited spending, then our government will be run by the people who raise the most money.
A momentary disgust with the status quo could get some 3rd party people elected, but to get re-elected they'll have to be out there hat in hand.
Although I usually vote for Democrats, they are just as beholden to the moneyed class as the GOP. Just look at the pandering to drug companies and insurance companies during the health care debate.
That was all Democrats pandering.
If all money is banned more than 100 dollars. Kennedys/McCains/Kerrys and the mayor of NYC still get elected and still have power.Waste of taxpayer money will always continue. We have lost the nerve in this country we have no follow through. Our goverment works, just not for all the people.I think the two headed monster is Capitalism and Democracy. Unfortunately, all of us are smorgesboard Americans picking out what we like and bitchin about what we don't.
I hate the idea of public funding. it sounds French. since this is America and the courts tend to prohibit anything that restricts free speech, why not let individuals spend whatever they want as long as it is public. it is institutional and organized money the scares me.
let's change it... convince some big $ to "do the right thing" and publicize the hell out of changing the status quo... and then create a groundswell of French Revolution proportions... Bastille Day '10 might be right time to kick it off
Your blog keeps getting better and better! Your older articles are not as good as newer ones you have a lot more creativity and originality now keep it up!
Warrenout's observation of a basically flawed system does illuminate the underlying problem with all schemes of mortals: perfection is elusive. We can fault Islamic fundamentalists for everything but the commonality we have: a search for a better structure. Of course we don't share their vision. They just want to mark all the cards so they are always the dealers, the house and the winners.
Looking at other economic and political systems takes us just so far. These systems are not pure, human nature tends towards self-serving and corruption seeps in. The question is, does this great nation have the will and stomach to look itself in the mirror and find its way back.
I guess I'm okay with individual giving with no bundling permitted. I certainly don't want to be "French". Sunshine is supposed to be the best disinfectant so strict, instant reporting would be a absolute requirement.
hope I am not too late here for people to read but if you really want to affect change in this country change the way we tax ourselves. Read The Fair Tax.
Dont worry you lazy, roll another ones, The Great American Tea Party is coming to save the day. No more worries abot taxes or government spending. Everyone will be able to;own automatic weapons, raise their rape victim daughters fatherless children,& watch the end of all government social programs because the poor will either be in the military or staved to death.
